Last week’s missive on where to publish a story in 2024 seems to have struck a chord with ARC Worlds readers, so I’m going to continue on that topic for the next few posts.

Where to publish a story in 2024
Welcome back to your weekly ARC Worlds missive! Last week’s reader poll still has a few minutes left of life. Based on the votes in last week’s reader poll, it seems like I am the most popular writer on the Internet, right after . Don’t believe me? Check out the poll
Except for this upcoming series, it’s not just going to be me pontificating about abstract possibilities, I’m going to actually publish a new story next week and take you through my thought process on where and how I’m going to publish it.
“What is this new story?” you might be asking.
Unfortunately, I need to keep you in suspense a little longer, but if you want a clue, then check out this post from last year:
3 new stories, 3 worlds to explore
Editor’s Note: This week, we are taking a break from a new chapter of Guild of Magic to bring you something slightly different. Also, in case you missed it, the giveaway for issue #1 of David Pepose’s phenomenal The O.Z. (The Hurt Locker meets The Wizard of Oz
What else can I tell you?
First, the story is going to be free to read and you’ll also be able to buy it.
Second, I’m going to be releasing the story serially. How frequent a serial will be revealed on launch day.
Third, it’s not a full-length novel. So don’t worry about having to dedicate a dozen hours of your free time. Or having to catch up on 40 chapters if you fall behind.
Finally, I have a plan for how I am going to roll out the story’s release, but as I progress through that plan, I will be re-assessing each step of the way and will adapt as I see how people are reacting to it.
Sorry for all the vagueness, but in an age of spoiler-laden trailers and marketing pre-launch efforts that last for months, I still think there’s something to be said for genuine surprise and not knowing what to expect.
To end on a meta note, this post announcing that I’m releasing a new story is part of the plan, even though I’m not revealing any specifics.
As a compliment to surprise, another powerful force in marketing is anticipation. It is my supposition that you will be more excited for next week’s launch if you know that it is coming (vaguely) than if I were to just drop it in your inbox without warning.
So be on the lookout for the launch email next week, and I hope you’ll come along for the ride!
