Editor’s Note: It’s Wednesday, so that means it’s New Comic Book Day and another edition of Amazing Journey!
The Amazing Journey column will touch on a comics-related topic, such as writing the first issue of a series, what it’s like to run a comic book store, working with artists, and how writing comics is different from writing prose.
It’s the first Wednesday of the month and it’s the week before New York Comic Con! I am going to be giving you wall-to-wall coverage (not really) of NYCC after the fact in two weeks, but next week, get pumped for the much-teased column on writing first issues, featuring a bevy of quotes from comic writers near and far.
In the meantime, it is the first NCBD since my comic shop closed and I am feeling the void left by its absence. If you didn’t catch my piece last week on the importance of comic book shops, it’s definitely worth a read:
That brings me to the Question of the Week: What was the last comic convention you went to?
You may have noticed that I’ve phased out the monthly giveaway, which didn’t seem to be moving the needle one way or another in terms of commenting.
Of course I still value your comments, and I am going to be doing an end-of-the-year giveaway that the top commenters from the past year are already going to win, but I will have an extra copy to give away to a random commenter as well, so stay tuned!
What I’m reading this week
G.O.D.S. #1 - Jonathan Hickman returns to a hopefully ongoing monthly Marvel book for the first time since July 2021 (and his first Marvel book since December of that year) with a new take of Marvel’s cosmic entities in a battle of science vs. magic! With Valerio Schiti on art and a triple-sized first issue, this is my book of the fall.
Transformers #1 - Daniel Warren Johnson launches the next part of the Energon universe by writing and drawing the newest story of the Robots in Disguise, which will tie in to Void Rivals and the G.I. Joe books.
Fantastic Four #12 - As I said on Twitter last night, Ryan North has gifted us with the Fantastic Four battling the dinosaur Avengers, so please do not skip the issue (and the next). Mr. North agrees:
