The goal of this chapter was to build out Jen as a real person. Up until now, we have only seen her being pushed along by the Quests and her desire to find out more information about this strange world she's discovered.
But Jen didn't magically appear at the beginning of the book (well, sort of).
She had a life prior to the start of this story, she has an underlying personality, she has relationships going back years. Those need to factor in to this story so that she doesn't feel like a cardboard cutout/reader stand-in.
I also wanted to have a reflection chapter to slow things down a bit as we build toward one of the early climaxes of the book.
