As I've been discussing over the past few author's notes, I like when a story gives you all the puzzle pieces and then assembles them for you at the climax without you realizing that you in fact had all the pieces to begin with.

If you read back carefully, you could see most of the pieces of the secret of Jen's locket scattered throughout the book, but several more were purposefully withheld. You'll find out the rest in the books to come.

From chapter 2:

"I unclasped the locket from around my neck and held it in my hands. It was silver, the size of a dollar coin, and the clasp had long since rusted over. I don’t remember if I opened it at the time my mother gave it to me and if I had, its contents were now lost in my memory along with the rest of my childhood."
