The genesis of the locked door in the Washington Square Park arch was a random factoid I saw while walking around the city that said "The door in the Washington Square Park Arch has been locked since 1917."
I originally interpreted that to mean that the door has been locked and unopened since 1917, but unfortunately only the first part is true. Anyway, still very cool. If you want to see what's actually inside the arch, check out this link below:
